Kiwi's Journey: A Story of Hope for a Degenerative Condition
A DVM's Perspective: The Story of Kiwi
Kiwi came to us with a diagnosis of Lysosomal storage disease, a rare, severe neurological condition, and a poor initial prognosis (“he won’t make it to a year old” was noted in his medical records on my initial review). This case perfectly illustrates that even when a condition will not get better, there is still so much we can do to provide a high quality of life in the time that they have left, and often extend that high quality time beyond the original prognosis. Through a focus on pain and inflammation, and encouraging Kiwi to maintain his mobility for as long as possible, his family was able to give him a high quality of living for years longer than anyone expected.
Kiwi’s Family: What Pet Parents Are Saying
Can you share a brief story about your pet's health journey and how our team has helped you during your visits?
Kiwi was referred to Ruff Day Vet after he was diagnosed with Lysosomal storage disease (LSD) and having double knee patella luxation surgery. His initial prognosis was not good, by all measures he should have crossed the rainbow bridge a few years ago. Fortunately, his degenerative disease has had a slow progression, and we truly believe that the sessions with Dr. Misener have helped give him better quality of life and continue his mobility.
What specific services or treatments did your pet receive at Ruff Day Vet?
Acupuncture and laser. Exercise suggestions for home.
What do you appreciate most about the care your pet has received, and how has their health and well-being improved since starting treatment with us?
Dr. Misener’s sincere medical opinion about Kiwi's prognosis, her patience, and better quality of life.
Are there any standout moments or milestones during your time with Ruff Day Vet?
Kiwi is aways excited to see Dr. Misener and Adam. Getting assistance from Dr. Misener for Kiwi's wheel cart while sad, we truly appreciate her help and care for Kiwi.
What advice or encouragement would you give to other pet owners considering our services?
Even if your furry friend has a condition that will not get better, I would encourage you to seek therapy for them in order to improve their quality of life and extend their mobility a bit longer.
Do you have any personal anecdotes or special memories involving your pet that you’d like to share?
The first time Kiwi walked in the office in his wheel cart he was so happy. And the day he finally let Dr. Misener put in all the acupuncture needles without protesting.

Crucially, we believe treatment should be enjoyable. We offer a profound perceptual break from the constant experience of pain, welcoming patients to Ruff Day Vet, a place they love. Here, rehabilitation becomes a positive social experience that reinforces how exercise can genuinely make them feel good in body and mind. By addressing the psychological and social factors of chronic illness alongside the physical, we equip pets with tools for a better quality of life and provide the essential friendship and support necessary for truly comprehensive care.
