What does an electric guitar have in common with ESTIM treatment?

Acoustic guitars create beautiful melodies, but the addition of electricity allows the musician to amplify their tune so it may be heard in much larger venues. The electronics linked to the guitar also modulate the quality, depth, and character of sound. 

E-stim is a catch-all term that refers to the application of an electrical current to tissues to achieve desired outcomes. Electroacupuncture delivers current by attaching the leads directly to the acupuncture needles. And much like the guitar above, E-stim amplifies and modulates the pain-relief signals.

In patients who do not tolerate acupuncture, many of the same benefits can be seen by placing pads on the pet’s skin, a treatment called Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation or TENS. E-stim is used to treat pain, swelling, muscle spasms and neurological dysfunction. It has also been shown to induce the release of the body’s own pain-relieving hormones, like opioids and endorphins.
